If you missed our Open House and would like a tour of the school or more information please call 482-3736.  Also, have you checked out our website? It is a great way to see our school in action (www.stasalbanyny.org).

ICE CREAM SOCIAL

to the Parent and School Association (PSA) who provided our school with a wonderful ice cream social on Thursday January 31 to end the celebration of Catholic Schools Week.  Several different toppings for the ice cream were provided, and the children had a great time making choices.  Thank you PSA!

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK ART EXHIBIT

Beginning January 27 and ending February 1, 2008, several students from St. Teresa’s and other area Catholic Schools had a special exhibit of their artwork in the South Lobby of the Empire State Plaza. On January 29 from4-5 P.M. there was an opening reception at the Empire Plaza for parents, students, teachers and other invited guests.  Collectively the schools received a Legislative Proclamation honoring the occasion.

SPAGHETTI DINNER NEWS

The Fr. Mealey Italian Night Dinner, held January 26, was a great success thanks to all the parents, relatives and friends who came.  A special thanks to Chef Kathy Purello along with her crew who helped to make 1500 meatballs (some to be used on Primary Day, see below) and delicious sauce.  There were many behind the scenes people who sold tickets, set up, served dinners, took care of garbage disposal and rearranged the social center.  It was a wonderful evening and your support is greatly appreciated.

PRIMARY DAY AT STAS

On Tuesday, February 5 starting at noon, voting will begin in the gym at our Middle School. We will be providing a take-out spaghetti and meatball dinner for anyone wishing to purchase at a bargain price of $5, with a children’s portion for $3.  Just think, you will arrive home, and dinner is ready to put on the table! Don’t forget to vote!

FILIPINIANA NIGHT AT STAS

On March 29, our Philippine families are sponsoring a Filipiniana Night at St. Teresa’s which will include food, dancing, singing, and possibly a variety show.  Just to let you know, those of us who attended last year are hoping that EMPANANDAS will be on their menu.  They were delicious! We hope all of our STAS and Parish community will mark their calendars and plan to come to this cultural evening on March 29.  You will receive more information as the time of this event comes closer.

K OF C POSTER CONTEST

Congratulations to Samantha Malatino, 8th grader, whose poster on Drug and Alcohol Awareness was one of the winning entries in the annual Knights of Columbus Poster Contest. Sam received a $100 savings bond. Sam and the winners from other diocesan schools had their picture taken for the February issue of The Evangelist.

   STAS CHORUS INVITE

STAS Chorus, consisting of grades 5-8, and directed by Dr. Joseph Eppink from the College of St. Rose, has been asked to perform at Bishop Maginn High School for their spring Broadway musical hit Little Shop of Horrors.  The chorus will be singing the chorus parts during the show.  This will be a great opportunity for our chorus students to work with high school students in presenting this entertaining and fun show! Show dates are March 28 & 29. Further information on how to purchase tickets to follow.

Caitlin Fansler began weekly visits to Kindergarten and 1st Grade.  She is from the Diocesan Office of Prevention Services.  She is conducting a 6 week program entitled “Apple-A-Day”.  It will touch on topics ranging from self-esteem to healthy habits. Upon completion of this program each child will receive free books to bring home.

The First Grade has been busy making family collages with their family at home.  They are beautiful, and we learned a lot about our families.  They have also been reading winter books and creating dioramas about the stories. Please come in to see them because we are so happy about the way they came out.

The 2nd graders who have been working in the Reading Room on their confidence, fluency and word recognition are making great progress. Last Thursday morning, they shared their blossoming skills with the Nursery school and Pre-K by taking turns reading short, funny stories.  The audience laughed and cheered and made the second graders feel duly proud.

On Thursday, January 24, Grade 4 visited Crailo Historic Site in Rensselaer.  They spent a wonderful morning learning about Colonial Dutch life.  Their favorite part was baking cookies next to a cozy fire using a recipe from the 1700’s.

Instead of watching movies or having a party, the 5th Grade class spent the day before their Christmas break reaching out to others. They visited the homes of shut-ins of the parish and went to McAuley Residence to sing Christmas carols. Both the students and the people they entertained truly enjoyed the experience.  The students are also continuing to write letters to our home-bound parishioners so that those who are not able to get out to parish/school events can keep informed about what is happening and know they are not forgotten.

On Friday, January 25, the 8th grade hosted a Winter Wonderland dance. It was a blast!  They danced the night away with Kim as the DJ. They were all having fun dancing, and sharing snacks.  Sr. Patricia even danced with them!  Great fun was had by all. We hope to have one more dance and anticipate all come and join in the fun!

 Computer News

In the grammar school, Kindergarten and first grades have been using various pieces of software to improve language arts and math skills.  Second graders have just finished writing original stories titled “If I Were An Animal”.  Some students chose to create original pictures, while others learned about image searches on the internet and obtained pictures that way.  Third graders are just learning some of the basics of Powerpoint and are making slides about their favorite holidays.  Fourth graders are expanding last years knowledge about Powerpoint and creating small presentations about things important to them. Fifth graders are finishing original brochures they designed and created about St. Teresa of Avila School and are doing a fantastic job. Sixth graders are working on a project in honor of Black History Month in February. Each student has chosen one African-American who he/she feels should be honored and is researching that person. A Powerpoint presentation is then being created about the person.  Seventh graders are working hard on a project relating to poverty in the U.S.  There is a contest in the diocese and 2-3 projects will be chosen to represent our school in the contest. Students are using combinations of photography, video, software, art, and music in the presentations. So far, it looks like we will be faced with a very difficult decision in choosing who will represent our school!  The Eighth Grade is also working on a project in honor of Black History Month. In pairs, they are researching the Civil Rights Movement and creating Powerpoint presentations as well. Look for some of these projects at our spring learning fair!

JUST A REMINDER

The Gator Gazzette, our school’s monthly newspaper, is now included on our website (www.stasalbanyny.org). Don’t forget to read it on-line and maybe mark it as one of your Favorites!
