MULTI-MEDIA ART CONTEST

On April 2, Sr. Patricia, Mrs. Graham and Mrs. D’Alessandro took Lexi Zerrillo, Sam Malatino, Vanessa Berisic, Allison House and Jen Dumond to the Catholic Charities Multi-Media Arts Contest Luncheon at the Pastoral Center. It was a very nice luncheon.  All the students who attended submitted work they created in regards to poverty in one of the categories; literature, audio-visual, or visual arts.  They all created these projects after they did some research about poverty in our world and ways to help people overcome poverty. Sr. Jane Herb, our superintendent, and Bishop Hubbard were even there to celebrate the winners in the diocese. As Bishop Hubbard reminded us, what we do for the least of our brothers, we do for God. We at STAS should be very proud of the 5 students who attended the luncheon for they all won! Sam won honorable mention in literature for her piece of writing, Vanessa won 3rd place in visual arts for her poster, Jen and Allison won 3rd place in the audio-visual category for their power point project, and Lexi won 1st place in literature for her poem.  Lexi’s poem was so good, it was chosen to move on to the regional level of the contest! Congratulations to all our winners!

United Against Poverty

Most of us do not know what poverty is

To have that uncontrollable fear of failure

To hear the starving cries of your children

Because you cannot afford to feed them

To know that you don’t have a job because

 no one will hire you

We all hope to never go through times

as rough as these

But many of us ignore the portion of our society that is below the poverty line

If we choose to pretend that there is no poverty

in the U.S., then it will never go away

Choosing to ignore the problem will not

resolve it

Our nation is only as strong as the people within it

So what can we do to help?

We need to support those of us who are in poverty

Those of us fortunate enough to have money

need to give back

Donate to a charity that will help those in the

U.S. that are in poverty

Make a difference through politics, and vote for people who will pass laws to improve healthcare and fight to get Americans out of poverty

We need to make our country stronger, we need to unite against poverty in America.

ART CONTEST WINNERS

Congratulations to Abby DeCastro from Grade 3 for her winning art drawing in the Lions Eye Bank, “Gift of Sight” poster contest. Her work will represent the month of March in a calendar to be produced by the Lions Eye Bank.  Abby received her award from Mayor Gerald Jennings and Sr. Mary Jane Herb, IHM during a ceremony held on April 24 at the Empire State Plaza South Concourse. Our Art teacher, Miss Chonski, was also recognized with a certificate for guiding the students in their artistic endeavors.

Congratulations to Elizabeth Holland from Grade 6 for her winning art poster in the Pro Life Council, “Giving a Voice to the Voiceless” contest.  Elizabeth’s award was presented on April 27 at the ceremony held at LaSalle School in Troy.

FILIPINIANA NIGHT AT STAS

We would like to thank Jepthe Rubi and Raffy Tragico, who along with many other families helped to organize and make this evening such a great success.  The school earned to date, and we understand there is still a little more yet to come, $2,117.53.. Again, thank you for your continuing support.

VARIETY SHOW

Our 5th annual Variety Show was a huge success thanks to the organizational efforts of Chris and Kathy Kucharek Doody and those who helped in making the show such a success. The audience was treated to a delightful display of talent on the part of our students and friends.  All performers did an excellent job whether they sang, danced, played musical instruments or acted in skits.  The amount of talent in this school is amazing, and we are proud of all of you. Thank you for sharing your gifts with us.  A special thank you also to Kathy Purello and all her helpers for providing food and drinks.

SCHOOL BOARD MEMBERS NEEDED

There are openings on our School Board.  Meetings are once a month, usually on the 2nd Thursday. The term is two years, renewable for two more years.  Anyone who is interested, (parents or parishioners), should send a resume of sorts to Fr. Vincent with reasons why they would like to serve. The resume is only to know what kinds of experiences you can bring to the Board.  Please have those  in by May 15, 2008.

Scholarship Exam to LaSalle InstituteLexi and Brendan, we at STAS are very proud of all your accomplishments.

80TH ANNIVERSARY ALUMNI NEWS

What a wonderful event! Mass was concelebrated by Bishop Hubbard, Fr. Peter Young, Fr. Vincent and Fr. John Lanese as homilist. The dinner and party were terrific.   The food, atmosphere and music was thoroughly enjoyed by everyone.  Alumni from the 1930’s to the 2000’s were represented. First prize winner Ruth Travis, a parishioner, received 12 gift certificates to different restaurants. The woman’s Irish basket was won by Lori Wisnewski Bigley and the men’s Irish basket was taken home by Mrs. Margaret Cahalan also a parishioner.  There was a surprise basket of wine, cheese, crackers and dinner gift certificates won by Ann Kelly. The money earned, $13,300 plus, will be put toward tuition assistance next year. Thank you to all who helped to make this 80th anniversary such a success.

PENNY PARADE

Thanks to everyone’s generosity, we were able to donate $318.33 to the Mohawk & Hudson River Humane Society. We collected $145.33 in pennies and $173  in silver coins.  It was so heavy that it took both Mrs. Graham and Coach to carry the money!  Sr. Patricia said the people who work at the Humane Society were very happy and appreciative to get the donation.  Now they will have more money to supply the animals with food and provide other services the animals need.  Thank you for being great stewards of our Earth and helping our furry friends!

GOLF TOURNAMENT NEWS

Hopefully, you have your calendars marked for the 7th Annual Golf Tournament which is scheduled for Monday, June 23 at the Colonie Country Club.  We are still looking for sponsors, patrons, and prizes to raffle (we already have a TV, 4 Giants tickets, 2 hr. wine and cheese for 10 at the Mansion Hill, and an alpaca cape).   As you know, whatever is realized on each year’s tournament is taken off our per pupil cost for next year.  We need everyone’s  support.    Anyone  interested in participating in any way, please contact Chris Lenaghan, 438-6450 or school at 482-3736.

The above named scholars have obtained 90% or better for the third marking period this school year.  Please know that Sr. Patricia, the teachers, staff, and your parents are very proud of you. Congratulations everyone!

Under the guidance of Mrs. Stevens, the Kindergarten and first grade made what has been dubbed as “Stevens’ Heads”! We used knee high stockings added some grass seed and filled them with potting soil.  We spread the grass seeds around and left room to make creative faces. After watering, our “heads” began to sprout green hair in a few short days.  The last thing we did was to put faces on our “Stevens’ Heads”.  They each have a personality of their own. What Fun!!!
