SCHOOL OF CHARACTER

For the months of January and February, we are going to focus on the virtue of love – our love of ourselves, members of our family and school, friends, and God.  In avoiding materialism, we need to realize how blessed we are to be surrounded by so many who love us and whom we love. During these months, you will see collages made by each class showing these special people in our lives. We will also engage in other activities such as writing letters to the homebound and being more positive in our words and actions to those around us.  With the New Year starting, we are focusing on dispelling the darkness in our world and spreading God’s and our love and bringing ‘light to our world’.

SCHOOL BANKING

For the past few years, we have offered school banking for our students, teachers and staff through First Niagara Bank.  We have sent home information regarding this program in the December monthly envelope.  It is not too late to sign up by asking Mrs. Bulger or Mrs. Flynn for an application. The children are allowed to have their own accounts and bank once a week, which is a good way to teach them how to save money.

PEACE ON EARTH – GOOD WILL TO MAN

On Wednesday, December 12, our middle school students spent an afternoon of recollection setting goals for the season of Advent.  These new goals had nothing to do with shopping, wrapping or decorating.  The students prayed, listened to music and scripture, role played, discussed questions and searched their hearts until they had a separate plan for each week of Advent. They now know exactly how they will use their own good will to spread Peace on Earth during these four important weeks. Each one brought home a self-made Advent Wreath to remind him or herself of a personal plan for each week.

CHILDREN’S CHRISTMAS PARTY

to the Parent School Association (PSA) who hosted the Children’s Christmas Party in the Social Center following the Volleyball Match and Posada.  It was a wonderful way to celebrate the season as a school community.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

We are celebrating Catholic Schools Week during the week of January 27 thru February 1 with many activities; an ice cream social provided by the Parent School Association, a funny hat day, a crazy sox day, Guptils Roller Skating, and further events to be announced.

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK ART EXHIBIT

Beginning January 27 and ending February 1, 2008 several students from St. Teresa’s along with other area Catholic Schools will have a special exhibit of their artwork in the South Lobby (near the State Museum end of the concourse) of the Empire State Plaza.  On January 29 between 4-5 P.M. there will be an opening reception at the Empire Plaza for parents, students, teachers and other invited guests.  Students selected for inclusion will be notified by Miss Chonski.

STAS OPEN HOUSE

Sunday, January 27, immediately following 10:30 Mass, we will hold OPEN HOUSE in the Grade School and Middle School.   The event will end at 1:30 P.M. It is for parents of already enrolled students and also prospective parents who are interested in learning more about our school. Applications for the 2008-2009 school year can be picked up this day in either building.  Thereafter, please call 482-3736 to arrange for picking up an application and tour of the school.

    BOOKS FOR OUR LIBRARY

Kathy Kucharek Doody and family donated two books which they purchased and while at the authors signing at the Book House they had Maureen M.E. Grealish, author, illustrator and friend autograph the books. She dedicated her books: “To the children of St. Teresa of Avila School with very best wishes”. The books, FLECK of the Kingdom of Ranidae and Just Plain Worm, a younger child’s book with illustrations are now in our school Library.  We wish to thank the Doody family for this wonderful donation and also to Ms. Grealish for dedicating her books to STAS children.

Fourth Grade visited the New York State Museum on December 12. They attended a program called “People of the Longhouse” where they learned many interesting facts about Iroquois life. For example, they learned about the 3 Sisters (corn, beans, and squash), dugout canoes, Iroquois legends, clothing, tools and about important animals such as the beaver, the bear and the white-tailed deer.  They enjoyed sitting in the longhouse and imagining themselves as Iroquois children.  They had a very enjoyable morning!

On November 30, the 5th and 6th grade classes hosted a movie and game night. It was a great success, raising $215.00 for the Christ Our Brother Fund. We thank all who attended the event for their support. We also extend a very special thanks to all the parents who helped set up, clean up, and chaperone for the event. You are much appreciated!

The Faculty and Staff of STAS wish everyone a

    HEALTHY AND HAPPY NEW YEAR
